I was about 10 years into television journalism. I had interviewed Ministers, CEOs, leaders who could capture a room with one sentence.
One day I walked into a brand campaign strategy meeting with a Fortune 500 CEO. High stakes. Everyone in the room more senior than me.
I said less than I meant to say. I agreed with options I did not believe in. I let a point I knew was right, slide past because the moment had gone and I had not taken it.
If I could shrink in a room, despite interviewing authority figures all the time, this is possibly happening to everyone else too.
It was not a confidence problem. I have never lacked confidence in front of a camera, on a stage, or off it. It was something else.
In television, an audience judges you in under 7 seconds. I have watched a first-time guest hold a room in a minute. I have watched someone with three times their experience lose it in the same minute. The difference was never charisma.
It was alignment. Whether what you do on the outside matches what is true on the inside.
Executive presence is not a mask you put on at work and take off in the lift. It is not performance. It is alignment. And it is learnable.
